KATHUA/NEW DELHI: After the hearing got over on Monday, Sanji Ram told reporters a narco test “will make everything clear”. The other accused said they wanted a CBI probe. Investigations by J&K Police’s Crime Branch had found the accused, including the juvenile, involved in the rape and murder of the girl. In the Supreme Court, the child’s biological father sought transfer of the trial outside the state. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra asked the J&K government to respond to the petition. The next hearing is on April 27.

Senior advocate Indira Jaising, appearing for the girl’s father amid threats to lawyers, told the court the atmosphere in Kathua was so polarised that a fair trial was not possible. “There are attempts being made at the highest levels to undo the good investigation done by the state police,” she said.“Why is this demand to take the probe away from the police?” she asked, responding to advocate Anuja Kapoor, who intervened and sought the handover of the probe to the CBI.
