NEW DELHI: The income tax department will hold a fortnightlong grievance redressal programme to settle disputes related to rectification of adjustments made in tax demands.

In an advisory issued to its field offices, the central board of direct taxes has asked local offices to organise the grievance redressal programme from June 1 to 15. The CBDT said delay in addressing grievances also affects the performance of the department. Tax departments are the biggest litigants in courts and before various tribunals.

The I-T department has accumulated a pendency of over 4.26 lakh cases over the years across tax tribunals, HCs and the SC. The revenue locked in litigations amounted to more than Rs 9.60 lakh crore as of June 2017, something the gover nment is concer ned about.
